ABSTRACT
Abstract Water disinfection is a crucial challenge for humanity. Approaches that are effective, cheap, environmentally friendly, and do not promote gene exchange between bacteria urgently required. Strongly oxidizing radicals highly promising to achieve this as they lead bacterial activation at high efficiencies. However, sources consistently generate these limited energy UV/H 2 O treatments requiring large input. Here the use of abundant, brownmillerite (Ca Fe 5 ) demonstrated an efficient radical generation material under dark conditions, showing seven order magnitude decrease in concentration over 10 min. This attributed release interlayer Ca 2+ from layered structure hydroxyl generation. The efficacy by disinfecting turbid sewage sludge. identification nontoxic antibacterial will provide opportunity broad scale clean water globally, address United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal sanitation.
