ABSTRACT
Abstract Background A carbohydrate-rich drink (CHO) has been shown to reduce preoperative discomfort. It was hypothesized that it may also postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). Methods Patients undergoing elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy under inhalational anaesthesia (127 women 45 men; mean(s.d.) 48(15) years) were randomized either fasting, intake of CHO (50 kcal/100 ml, 290 mOsm/kg) or placebo. The non-fasting groups double-blinded; patients ingested 800 ml liquid on the evening before surgery 400 2 h anaesthesia. Nausea pain scores a visual analogue scale (VAS) episodes PONV recorded up 24 after surgery. Results incidence lower in than fasted group between 12 (P = 0·039). placebo higher operation admission hospital 0·018 P < 0·001 respectively), whereas there no significant change group. No intergroup differences VAS seen. use anaesthetics, opioids, antiemetics intravenous fluids similar all groups. Conclusion have beneficial effect 12–24 cholecystectomy.
