ABSTRACT
Abstract Some authors argue that both substance dependence and eating disorders should be considered as dependent behaviours. Similarities differences between these disorders, however, remain unclear. This study compares processes of emotion regulation in adolescents young adults (15 to 25 years old) with (SD) or (ED). One hundred thirteen SD, 50 ED 86 non‐clinical subjects (NC), recruited four French Swiss locations, completed a self‐report questionnaire strategies. addresses the subjects' relationships, concerning past present family, refers Main's (1990) concept primary strategy (balanced activation deactivation attachment behaviours), secondary strategies (hyperactivation excessive system). Participants were also questioned structured interviews, about life events DSM‐IV classification criteria. SD reported more adverse than NC. using fewer NC, had different from those ED. Patients hyperactivation, system. It is hypothesized while have common poorly regulated strategies, they differ way process relationship‐related information. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
