ABSTRACT
Abstract Blunted cardiovascular responses to stress have been associated with both mental and physical health concerns. This multi‐method, longitudinal study examined the role of chronic social‐developmental from adolescence onward as a precursor these blunted responses. Using diverse community sample 184 adolescents followed age 13 29 along friends romantic partners, this found that high levels parental psychological control at directly predicted heart rate response indirectly respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) reactivity under stress. Heart effects were mediated via indicators developing passive style, including observational measures withdrawal during conflict social disengagement, coping stressors by using denial. RSA partners The current findings are interpreted suggesting mechanism which key social/developmental stressor in may alter relational ultimately physiological patterns responding into adulthood.
