ABSTRACT
Abstract Multiparty alliances (MPAs) are increasingly used to deliver large utilities infrastructure projects on‐time, on‐budget, and specified quality. In theory, MPAs should help buyers coordinate suppliers, enable concurrent scheduling, create process innovations. On the other hand, these governance structures inherently less stable than dyadic relationships due their additional complexity greater opportunities for free riding. We conduct a multi‐source, longitudinal study, investigating how buyer actively manages dynamics between competition cooperation during formation of an MPA consisting lead organization directional all partners. contribute coopetition literature by exploring that associated with structure would largely be absent in dyads, unpack which orchestrates sequentially introducing new initiatives seek balance coopetition. have been recommended governments industry bodies as one solution time cost overruns sector, our study also provides guidance on management alliance critical stage relationship lifecycle.
