ABSTRACT
Abstract Numerical examples are given which illustrate the poor performance of conventional finite elements in problems involving strain localization frictional materials. In one cases investigated, that granular media subjected to plane biaxial loading, isoparametric seen inhibit altogether. With these by way motivation, a recently proposed element method context materials is assessed, with particular emphasis on three‐dimensional problems. passing, some issues pertaining post‐bifurcation response specimens examined. particular, numerical simulations suggest observed softening geometrical effect not attributable constitutive behaviour.
