ABSTRACT
The problems encountered in the determination of the spatial distribution of bone density on a microscopic scale are discussed. A critical appraisal is presented of the practical problems encountered when specimen plane, or source plane, scanning microdensitometers are used to assess bone mineral density distributions as represented by microradiographs of thin bone sections. An image plane television scanning system is presented as the best solution with results to support its selection.
