Frequency and clinical characteristics of children and young people with type 2 diabetes at diagnosis from five world regions between 2012 and 2021: data from the SWEET Registry

Abstract Aims/hypothesis The diagnosis of type 2 diabetes is increasing in young people worldwide. This study evaluated the frequency and clinical characteristics presenting with from multinational SWEET e.V Registry 2012–2021, including first years COVID-19 pandemic. Methods a longitudinal observational based on Registry, which collects demographic data children adolescents centres worldwide, classification provided locally by each centre according to International Society for Paediatric Adolescent Diabetes definitions. By July 2022, included 96,931 individuals 130 total 1,154,555 visits. Data were analysed region: Europe (EU), Australia New Zealand (AU/NZ), South America (SA), North (NA) Asia/Middle East Africa (AS/AF). Trends proportions two-year periods, calculated as cases diagnoses over all diagnoses, estimated using logistic regression models adjusted age at onset sex. Results Overall, there 2819 58,170 new (4.8%) diabetes: 614 EU, 293 AU/NZ, 79 SA, 1211 NA 622 AS/AF. proportion increased 3.2% 6.0% 2012/2013 2020/2021, relative rate increase 9% per period (95% CI 5.9, 12.3; p <0.001). In pandemic, continued follow observed trend, 2020–2021 compared 5.4% 2018–2019. High variability was across regions, lowest values EU highest NA. A significant AU/NZ median HbA 1c not uniform AS/AF (85 mmol/mol [9.9%]; IQR 55–111 [7.2–12.3%]) (63 [7.9%]; 48–99 [6.5–11.2%]), difference between (median value 73 [8.8%]; 50–105 [6.7–11.8%]) statistically ( =0.047). There also BMI SD score 2.2 (IQR 1.4–2.7) 3.1 2.5–3.6) AU/NZ. Conclusions/interpretation 2012 2021 inclusive support recent findings worldwide people, albeit regional differences. highlights need ongoing preventive measures available advanced treatment modalities Graphical
