ABSTRACT
Ventricular enlargement is one of the most consistent abnormal structural brain findings in schizophrenia and has been used to infer shrinkage. However, whether ventricular related local overlying cortex and/or adjacent subcortical structures or it volume change globally not assessed. We systematically assessed interrelations volumes with gray white matter 40 Brodmann areas (BAs), thalamus its medial dorsal nucleus pulvinar, internal capsule, caudate putamen. acquired MRI ( patients (n = 64) healthy controls 56)) diffusion tensor fractional anisotropy (FA) (untreated n 19, 32). Volumes were by manual tracing central a semi-automated parcellation BAs. Patients had increased size associated decreased cortical widely across brain; similar but less pronounced pattern was seen normal controls; correlations (e.g. temporal horn lobe volume) appreciably higher than non-local prefrontal volume). White regions ventricles similarly did reveal strong regional relationships. FA center mass anterior limb capsule also appeared differentially influenced regional. Taken together, these indicate that interrelated diminution directly correlated loss immediately caudate, putamen, capsule.
