ABSTRACT
Sleep abnormalities have been reported in Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT), but data are scanty. We investigated their presence and correlation a large CMT patients' series.Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) Pittsburgh Quality Index (PSQI) were administered to patients of the Italian registry controls. ESS score > 10 indicated abnormal daytime somnolence, PSQI 5 bad sleep quality. analyzed with severity characteristics, Hospital Anxiety Depression (HADS), Modified Fatigue Impact (MFIS), Body Mass Index, drug use.ESS questionnaires filled by 257 253 patients, respectively, 58 Median was higher than controls (6 vs 4, p = 0.006), no difference for score. Abnormal somnolence poor quality occurred 23% 56% patients; such had more frequently anxiety/depression, fatigue, positive sensory symptoms those normal ESS/PSQI. Moreover, severe (median Examination Score, CMTES, 8 6, 0.006) frequent use anxiolytic/antidepressant drugs (29% 7%, < 0.001).Bad sleepiness correlated anxiety, depression confirming that different components affect sleep. disorders, as apnea restless leg syndrome, not specifically here, other factors known impact on somnolence. management must include behavior assessment evaluation its factors, including general distress fatigue.
