ABSTRACT
Abstract Purpose Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a major cause of visual impairment and blindness. This study evaluates the incidence progression AMD in large German cohort. Methods The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) population-based, prospective, observational cohort Germany that includes 15,010 participants between 35 74 years age. baseline examination, including fundus photography, was conducted 2007 2012, 5-year follow-up examination performed 2012 2017. grading photographs according to Rotterdam Eye classification. cumulative were calculated. Poisson regression analysis investigate factors associated with AMD. Results Six-thousand-eight-hundred-eighty-eight (49.8%, n = 3427 female) included analysis. prevalence 8.5% [95% CI: 7.9–9.2%] at 10.3% 9.6–11.1%] follow-up. 5-year-incidence 2.0% [1.7–2.4%]. within 5 seen 18.1% 15.1–21.5%] participants. higher age, for each 10-year increase risk doubles (RR 2.30), disease increased by 1.6. while also pseudophakic status. Conclusions In summary, this population-based sample provides substantial epidemiologic data from cohort, on younger age groups. over common population, subjects showed least one eye time frame Nevertheless, although usually defined occur 50, occurred 0.5% 5.4% those already affected youngest group before 50
