Hepatic segmental atrophy: a diagnostic challenge with variable clinicopathologic features and an association with cardiovascular disease

ABSTRACT
Abstract Hepatic segmental atrophy is an underrecognized pseudotumor that can cause diagnostic challenges. These lesions be mass-forming and demonstrate a range of pathologic features lead to errors on both imaging studies, frozen section, in biopsy material. The aim this study was better understand the clinicopathologic condition as well its association with cardiovascular disease. A retrospective computerized search files two institutions conducted spanning 2012 2024. All surgical slides were reviewed, clinical demographic information collected. There 45 patients, including 23 men 22 women median age 63 years. Most (35/45, 78%) patients had history hypertension or Thirty malignant neoplasm, seven cirrhosis. Histologically, cases showed variable histologic features, ranging from nodular elastosis more subtle featuring degenerative hepatocytes relative preservation bile ducts between them. Association these remote vascular injury might explained by disease, most commonly hypertension. current case series emphasizes importance recognizing lesion diseases. While lobular liver has been recognized complication many benign conditions, pathologists should aware present mass lesion.
