ABSTRACT
Abstract Thickened feeds may be useful in supporting improved suck–swallow–breath coordination and airway protection infants with dysphagia. Unfortunately, the stability of thickened for infant formulas is unpredictable, which makes use this strategy challenging. This study aimed to propose a set Level 1 (slightly thick) recipes Australian formulas/thickeners. A secondary aim was test whether formula could batch prepared. powdered, ready-to-feed, specialized were mixed two thickening products (Aptamil Feed Thickener® Supercol®) tested at 5-, 10-, 15-, 20-, 25-, 30-, 45-min intervals using International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI) Flow Test. Formula/thickener samples following manufacturer instructions, but adapted determine an ideal recipe consistency that would maintained over feed. Samples refrigerated, reheated after 12 h, retested. Each combination six times. Overall, 1,353 IDDSI Tests conducted 14 formula/thickener combinations. In all combinations, alterations made metric spoon measurements as opposed manufacturer-provided scoop. All most variable 5-min timepoint. Formulas Supercol® generally reached more stable by 10 min, whereas Aptamil 15 min. h Thickener®. provides practical recommendations clinicians working requiring dysphagia management. Further under controlled laboratory conditions required.
