ABSTRACT
Celiac Disease (CD) is associated with increased susceptibility to certain bacterial and viral infections. Herpes zoster (HZ) a infection that can be prevented by immunization. In the US, vaccine recommended for adults ≥ 50 or 19 at-risk conditions, not including CD. We aimed determine if adult patients aged < years CD had higher risk of developing HZ. designed retrospective cohort study. was defined as ICD-10 code positive serology. Patients negative serology lacking codes served controls. who HZ before diagnosis were excluded. formed two sub-cohorts, those (cohort 1) 2), evaluated at 10-year follow-up. To account confounding variables, we performed 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM). Following PSM, 1 6,826 patients, 2 5,337 respective matched After ten follow-up, in 1, 62 developed versus 57 controls, RR: 1.09 (CI: 0.76–1.56, p-value = 0.64). 2, 200 159 1.2 1.02–1.54, 0.03). There no significant difference likelihood getting 50, although modestly risk. Our findings do support routine early vaccination CD, should offered age 50.
