ABSTRACT
Disastrous floods in the twin cities of Nogales, Arizona, USA, and Sonora, Mexico (collectively referred to as Ambos Nogales) occur annually response monsoonal summer rains. Flood-related hazards include property damage, impairment sewage systems, discharge, water contamination, erosion, loss life. Flood risk, particularly is amplified by informal, "squatter" settlements watershed floodplain associated development infrastructure. The expected increase precipitation intensity, resulting from climate change, poses further risk flooding therein. We explore binational community perceptions flooding, preferences for management, potential actions address socio-ecological resilience Nogales using standardized questionnaires interviews collect data about people their preferences. conducted 25 semi-structured with local subject matter experts gathered survey responses members Nogales. Though was limited, frequencies were high enough conduct Chi-squared tests independence test statistically significant relationships between variables. Results showed that respondents previous experience corresponded level concern future floods. Additionally, perceived greater flood-related risks traveling across town damage vehicles than inundation or damages homes neighborhoods. Binationally, women felt less prepared men. On both sides border, agreed lacks adequate preparation To preparedness, they recommended flood education awareness campaigns, implementation green infrastructure, additional stormwater infrastructure (such drainage systems), enhanced early warning reduction flows through regulations reduce expansion hard surfaces. This study contributes systematic collection information an international including novel regarding related change gender-based assessments risk. Our finding commonalities border communities, types solutions members, provides clear directions education, outreach, well measures enhance cross-border cooperation.
