Unusual cause of palatal pain

Pain in the soft palate or pharyngeal region may occur due to various causes. Such pain is very difficult to diagnose because its varied origins may include vascular, muscular, ligamental, or osseous factors. Here we report the case of a 52-year-old male patient suffering from untraceable pain in the palate. Anatomical variations of the pterygoid hamulus of the sphenoid bone may be related to lesions observed in the posterior palatal mucosa and should be carefully evaluated using various imaging modalities, most importantly, computed tomography.
