ABSTRACT
Given that many patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) smoke despite their symptoms, it is important to understand the long-term health impact of cigarette substitution heated tobacco products (HTPs). We monitored parameters for 3 years in COPD who substantially attenuated or ceased consumption after switching HTPs. Changes daily smoking, annualized exacerbations, lung function indices, patient-reported outcomes (CAT scores) and 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) from baseline were measured using HTPs at 12, 24 36 months. These compared a group age- sex-matched continued smoking. Complete data sets available 38 (19 each group). Subjects had substantial decrease exacerbations within mean (± SD) 2.1 0.9) 1.4 0.8), 1.2 0.8) 1.3 12-, 24- 36-month follow-up (p < 0.05 all visits). In addition, clinically significant improvements CAT scores 6MWD identified three time points HTP cohort. No changes observed This study first describe effects use patients. Consistent respiratory exercise tolerance, quality life, rate abstained smoking reduced by use.
