ABSTRACT
Based on Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) technology, urban expansion of 75 cities in China from the 1970s to 2020 was reconstructed by visual-interpretation method, which described growing process lands its influences local land use structures synchronously. By employing annual area per city density, spatial-temporal characteristics macro patterns were analyzed aspects regional-distributions, administrative-levels population-sizes comprehensively. Results indicate that: 1) universal, distinct, persistent, periodic fluctuating. In past five decades, monitored expanded dramatically 3606.26 km2 30 521.13 km2. 2) Though presented significant differences regional distribution, administrative levels, population sizes, it exhibited a deceleration trend 13th Five-Year Plan among all kinds cities. 3) Cultivated first resource for expansion, 55.17% newly-expanded appeared encroaching this type. China's has caused sustained pressure cultivated protection, especially super megacities, contradiction between protection will always exist. 4) The compactness increased before 1987 reduced next three consistent with implementation major policies deployment national strategies, is expected become compact stopping declining or even rebounding after Plan.
