Summary Systematic monographs are an important tool for understanding biodiversity. However, while papers that outline systematic methods biogeography, phylogenetics and diversification commonplace, cover monographic taxonomic research rare. In this paper, we describe how conducted a study of Ipomoea , drawing attention to the resources made use practical steps took, with particular focus on integrated results from molecular morphological analyses. The monograph provided framework range subsequent research, including studies origin crop sweet potato. It is hoped our experience will provide blueprint others embarking preparation monograph.
