ABSTRACT
Abstract Functional angiogenesis is a critical therapeutic goal in many pathological conditions. Logically, the use of pro-angiogenic growth factors has been mainstay approach despite obvious limitations and modest success. Recently, macrophages have identified as key regulators host response to implanted materials. Particularly, our understanding dynamically plastic macrophage phenotypes, their interactions with biomaterials, varied roles different stages angiogenic processes evolving rapidly. In this review, we discuss changing perspectives on angiogenesis, relation implantable materials macrophage-centric strategies therein. Harnessing mechanisms through which macrophage-driven involved great potential for improving clinical outcome.
