ABSTRACT
Abstract Sesquioxides such as Y 2 O 3 and Sc are important optical materials, but the fabrication of their transparent ceramics remains a challenge due to ultra-high melting point over 2400 ° C. In this work, series (Y 1− x ) were successfully fabricated by simple vacuum sintering process without any additives, effect scandium (Sc) content ( on crystal structure optical/thermal/mechanical properties was evaluated. form complete solid solution with cubic bixbyite structure. The formation promotes densification ceramics, leading realization high transparency close theoretical transmittance wide wavelength range 0.35–8 µm. particular, in-line in 0.6–6 µm above 80% for = 0.23–0.31, while pristine opaque. Moreover, mechanical including Vickers hardness HV ), fracture toughness K IC biaxial flexural strength δ b evidently enhanced strengthening, thermal conductivity k is reduced reduction photon free path. This study demonstrates that forming facile universal approach preparing sesquioxide quality.
