An Egyptian Study of Sleep Disorders and Its Correlates in End-Stage Renal Disease Patients Receiving Hemodialysis

Various sleep disorders are reported to be frequent in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on hemodialysis. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of sleep disorders and their correlates among hemodialysis patients. This cross-sectional study included 200 recruited ESRD patients on hemodialysis, who were assessed for sleep disorders by administering Pittsburgh sleep quality index, Berlin questionnaire and STOP-BANG for sleep apnea, and International restless legs syndrome study group rating scale. The mean age of the study sample was 51.7 ± 6 years. Most of the patients were males (66.2%), and 53.2% of participants were governmental employees. The prevalence of hypertension and diabetus were (53.7%, and 13.9% respectively).It was found that 62.2% of the sample were classified as poor sleepers. While 25.9% had EDS and 11.4% had RLS. Sleep disorders are common but neglected in subjects on hemodialysis. Certain clinical correlates might negatively impact the severity of sleep disorders and thus worsen the dialysis efficiency. Early detection and treatment of sleep disorders in subjects with ESRD might improve the prognosis.
