BMI, functional and cognitive status in a cohort of nonagenarians: results from the Mugello study

ABSTRACT
Abstract Purpose The study of the relationship between body weight and health in old age has attracted increasing interest. aim present is to investigate association mass index (BMI) with functional cognitive status a group nonagenarians. Methods We analyzed 475 participants (348 women, 127 men; median 92 years) from Mugello study. Participants were evaluated through laboratory, instrumental examinations questionnaires. Results By grouping according BMI categories, better perception nutritional lower prevalence sarcopenia ( p < 0.05) observed overweight obesity compared normal or underweight. Concerning measures, obese showed significantly worse performance on short physical battery timed up go tests mini-mental state examination (MMSE). As regards other performed, no statistically significant differences observed. In multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusted for possible confounding factors, ≥ 30 kg/m 2 probability achieve poor MMSE (OR 0.42; 95% CI 0.19–0.94; = 0.035). Conclusion Our results support hypothesis that nonagenarians, higher associated ability. Further studies are needed explore mechanisms underlying this association.
