ABSTRACT
Abstract LEED observations have now been completed for the (100) surfaces of the divalent metal oxides MgO, CaO, CoO, MnO, NiO and EuO. Large data bases - up to 60 I(V) spectra - have been collected far CaO, MgO and NiO(100) and compared with the results of multiple scattering calculations. The analyses clearly indicate that these surfaces all have structures close to simple terminations of the bulk lattice, a finding which suggests that a degree of surface enhanced covalency may be present. This possibility is discussed in relation to the results of shell model calculations of the ionic positions in these surfaces.
