ABSTRACT
Abstract Drift tubes based on the principle of so-called “electrodeless drift chambers” have been developed. Electrons produced by an ionizing particle drift inside a rigid or flexible plastic tube and are registered at one end of the tube by an anode wire. Curved tubes up to 120 cm length have been operated with high efficiency. Drift tubes may be used as narrow time-projection chambers in storage ring experiments, for cheap calorimeters with high resolution and high repetition rate and in geometries that are hardly accessible to rigid detectors. We present in this paper also results on a planar electrodeless drift chamber. The efficiency of this chamber is above 99% for drift paths up to 20 cm.
