Tattoos: risks and complications, clinical and histopathological approach

ABSTRACT
Skin modification through tattoos is as old humanity itself. However, this trend on the rise, and with use of different types pigments application practices, both cutaneous systemic complications can arise. Adverse reactions be grouped into five classes: inflammatory, infectious, neoplastic, aesthetic, miscellaneous. On histopathology, inflammatory exhibit a lichenoid pattern or present spongiotic dermatitis, granulomatous reactions, pseudolymphoma, pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, scleroderma/morphea-like changes. This article reviews tattoo complications, including their clinical histopathological characteristics.
