ABSTRACT
Food insecurity and the lack of access to affordable, nutritious food are associated with poor dietary quality an increased risk diet-related diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, certain types cancer. Those lower socioeconomic status racial ethnic minority groups experience higher rates insecurity, more likely live in under-resourced environments, continue bear greatest burden chronic diseases United States. Despite growing body literature this area, there still significant gaps our understanding various pathways that link neighborhood environments racial/ethnic disparities health most effective intervention strategies address these disparities. To better understand science National Institutes Health (NIH), collaboration Centers for Disease Control Prevention (CDC) U.S. Department Agriculture (USDA), convened a virtual three-day workshop September 21-23 2021: Insecurity, Neighborhood Environment, Nutrition Disparities: State Science. The brought together diverse group researchers, practitioners, policymakers, federal partners expertise nutrition, environment, social policy, behavioral sciences. had three research objectives: 1) summarize state knowledge related nutrition disparities, 2) identify opportunities gaps, 3) examine evidence-based interventions implementation approaches promote equity. This article summarizes proceedings describes future emerged from discussions.
