The quality of the relation between handler and military dogs influences efficiency and welfare of dogs

ABSTRACT
Over the last 10 years, influence of dog–owner relationship on dog behaviour has received growing attention, unlike working handler's relationship. Using a questionnaire addressed to 430 handlers Belgian army in 2001 (303 respondents), this study investigated association between time spent by with their military (MD) and some behaviours these dogs, reflecting welfare, obedience, aggressiveness. Less than half took MD home and/or practised sport MD. Most practising also animal home. Statistically significant associations were detected. Obedience MDs was clearly greater living at sport. On contrary, we found no obedience either for first or length service. Handlers taking declared fewer bites other did. Bites concerned almost exclusively staff. Only one family member bitten an had been left kennel.
