ABSTRACT
The design and successful performance of citizen science-based monitoring require an understanding the motivation needs participants. Herem we use a questionnaire to assess intrinsic extrinsic motivations investigate in links between project support service 181 participants taking part three insect-focused science projects Denmark, Germany Israel. Across all countries, main for participating were "to have fun" "do something (good) nature". Equally important across countries such as "contribute science" nature conservation". Interestingly, differences (country or program-type) more strongly related respondent's than demographic variables age gender. Linking services participants' revealed that "feeling community" well "learning" provide "training on insect identification" positively related. "monetary incentives" was negatively with "conserve species generally" insects specifically". We conclude, early identification scientists' assessment how may change over time are foster sustainable programs. International networks (potentially similar) biodiversity schemes should consider cultural background scientist's requirements, accordingly tailor designs activate, train, according their needs.
