ABSTRACT
The effect of magnetite nanoparticles and nanocomposites (magnetite impregnated into graphene oxide) supplement on the recovery overloaded laboratory batch anaerobic reactors was assessed using two types starting inoculum: granular sludge (GS) flocculent (FS). Both nanomaterials recovered methane production at a dose 0.27 g/L within 40 days in GS. Four doses from 0.075 to 1 process FS systems between 30 50 relaying dose. presence helped reverse volatile fatty acids inhibition enabled microbial communities recover but also favoured development certain microorganisms over others. In GS reactors, methanogenic population changed being mostly acetoclastic (Methanothrix soehngenii) dominated by hydrogenotrophic species (Methanobacterium beijingense). Nanomaterial amendment may serve as preventative measure or provide an effective remedial solution for system following overloading.
