ABSTRACT
BackgroundUnderstanding prefrontal cortex projections to diencephalic-mesencephalic junction (DMJ), especially subthalamic nucleus (STN) and ventral mesencephalic tegmentum (VMT) helps our comprehension of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in major depression (MD) obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Fiber routes are complex tract tracing studies non-human primate species (NHP) have yielded conflicting results. The superolateral medial forebrain bundle (slMFB) is a promising target for DBS MD OCD. It has become focus criticism owing its name diffusion weighted-imaging based primary description.ObjectiveTo investigate DMJ connectivity NHP with special on slMFB the limbic hyperdirect pathway utilizing three-dimensional data driven techniques.MethodsWe performed left adeno-associated virus - tracer injections common marmoset monkey (n = 52). Histology two-photon microscopy were integrated into space. Manual cluster analyses DMJ, VMT together, followed by anterior streamline (ATTS) tractography deployed.ResultsTypical pre- supplementary motor was confirmed. advanced unraveled DMJ. Limbic territories directly projected but not STN.DiscussionIntricate results warrant application understand fiber-anatomical routes. applied techniques can enhance anatomical understanding also other regions fiber anatomy.ConclusionOur work confirms anatomy enfeebles previous misconceptions. rigorous approach strengthens role as structure predominantly psychiatric indications like
