ABSTRACT
Artificial coastal dykes have been widely built to prevent erosion, or accelerate sedimentation processes in saltmarshes. To investigate the sediment dynamic changes induced by construction of dykes, three observation stations were set around a dyke within an expanding Scirpus mariqueter saltmarsh, southern Hangzhou Bay. The hydrodynamics study area was dominated tidal currents. presence dyke, combination with adjacent creek, altered hydrodynamic boundary conditions, thereby affecting flow field. When flows approaching speed accelerated at head and then decreased rear, due narrowing effect head. Turbulence intensity showed similar pattern that flows. net input behind is approximately 2.3 times head, illustrating deposition back region dyke. As result, entrained sediments deposited cause local accretion promote saltmarsh vegetation succession. should be taken into account for future wetland management.
