ABSTRACT
In this paper, a design methodology for crashworthy structures is presented. Deterministic and evolutionary algorithms are linked with simplified models based on multibody dynamics formulations, and are used in the simulation and design of complex vehicle structures, such as train sets in crash events. During the first stages of the design process, these tools can be used in the conceptual design to obtain the best characteristics of the crashworthy structures and energy absorption devices of train structures. The design methodology is applied to single and multicriteria optimization of train sets in different collision scenarios.
