ABSTRACT
Meditation retreats are characterized by intensive or concentrated periods of meditation practice, commonly undertaken in a residential setting. Although research indicates that training can positively influence physical and mental health outcomes, the biological consequences retreat interventions relatively understudied. In this study, we examined month-long, silent on expression genes involved epigenetic modulation immune processes. We assessed gene changes experienced meditators attending month-long Insight (n = 28), as compared to community control group 34) practitioners living their everyday lives. Blood samples were collected day two (Time 1) again 3 weeks later 2). Control participants also across 3-week interval, during which they maintained regular daily routines. As controls, showed differential several chromatin inflammation. The most substantive finding was downregulation TNF pathway participants, not observed controls. These findings indicate participation may some inflammatory mechanisms development chronic diseases, style psychosocial intervention have therapeutic potential, particularly practitioners.
