ABSTRACT
The study deals with the quantification of urban sprawl and land transformation Dhanbad Urban Agglomeration (DUA) using geoinformatics gradient modeling during last four decades (1972–2011). Various multi-temporal satellite images viz., MSS (1972), ETM+ (1999, 2011) digital elevation model (CARTOSAT I, 2006) were used to analyse expansion, transformation, growth directions, spatial segregations within landscape develop an understanding nature built-up in DUA. area increased from 10.33 km2 46.70 (352.08%) along high rate population (160.07%) 1972–2011 exhibiting densification reveals that coal mining based city faced significant use converting vegetation (−41.33%) into loss productive lands for expansion impervious surface. per year exhibited increasing 0.4 km2/year 1.51 1972–1999 1999–2011 periods overall 332.73%. on varied zones exhibits 150–200 m is most preferred (79.01%) development (541.74%). represents percentage (built-up) gradually 3.48% 15.74% 1972–2011. result major took place south-west direction followed by south haphazard manner 1971–99 period, whereas predominant was observed north, majorly municipal limits. provides analytical method evaluate patterns milieu combining matrix. DUA indicates urgent imposition building bylaws zoning (land use, height density) regulations transform as liveable city.
