ABSTRACT
A pre-stressing technique for improving the ballistic performance of a circular silicon carbide tile has been tested against ø12-mm spherical steel projectile. The confining pre-stress was achieved through heat-shrunk collar and evaluated neutron diffraction ceramic-collar system. Subsequent experiments simulations impact event were used to elucidate mechanisms benefits on response. CT-scans various specimens, post-impact, show that affects trajectory Hertzian cone limits overall damage. Furthermore, qualitatively agreed with experimental result, showing reduction in crack propagation altered paths Greater stress led higher negative triaxiality, which act arrest tensile hoop stresses corresponding cracks.
