ABSTRACT
Abstract To ascertain if muscovite act as a new type of filler for self-lubricating composites, NiAl/muscovite composites were successfully fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The mechanical and tribological properties of the composites were investigated. It was found that the relative density, microhardness and fracture toughness of the composites were inversely proportional to the muscovite content. The tribological results showed that both the friction coefficient and wear rate of the composites distinctly decreased with the incorporation of muscovite. The composite with 9 wt% muscovite had the best anti-friction and anti-wear performance. The improvement of tribological properties could be attributed to the formation of self-lubricating films consisting mainly of Si-Al oxides.
