ABSTRACT
Apathy is a behavioral executive dysfunction roughly described with loss of motivation and interest, reduced initiation social interaction, poor persistence, indifference superficial emotional reactions. Alzheimer's Disease (AD) patients apathy show higher functional deterioration. We assume that frontal lobe hypofunction apathetic AD (aAD) are more apparent than the without apathy. The aim this study to address neuroanatomical correlates in early stage AD. Sample was gathered from Neurology Geriatric Psychiatry Departments Istanbul University Faculty Medicine diagnosis between October 2014 December 2015 (n=20). Cognitively normal 10 subjects were also included. All underwent comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, structural magnetic resonance imaging. sample divided into two groups according their Evaluation Scale scores. Scores sociodemographic descriptives given at Figure-1. Conditions like delirium, acute confusional state, head trauma, psychotic episodes medical history criteria for exclusion. care givers had informed consent. Symptom provocation method passive monitoring inside MR scanner used. Two sessions consisted 6 successive blocks, 20 seconds each. Using mirror, computer screen reflected. task included positive, negative neutral valenced pictures International Affective Pictures. Data Philips Achiva 3T MRI System. According analysis fMRI data FMRIB Software Library (FSL); valued compared evoke activation group's left angular gyrus (p=0.03; Z=3.93) which not followed aAD group. other outstanding result came comparison vs. positive blocks. This revealed right anterior cingulate (aCG) control when both Z=3.08) (p=0.003; Z=3.63) groups. Consistent literature aCG hypoactivation patient However, no distinction could be made upon difference can seen gyrus. pattern indicates and/or avoidance interpret visual stimuli.
