ABSTRACT
Decentralized methanol production in the context of energy storage (also called power-to-methanol or PtMeOH) requires development new process configurations. This is due to need avoid energy-intensive compression stages and adapt intermittent H2 availability. study aimed at determination techno-economic feasibility small-scale PtMeOH It was proposed that, small scale, pressure should be limited 30 bar, standard delivery an electrolyzer. cost complexity a compressor, unsuitable for systems. As CO2 conversion under these conditions, several configurations differing valorization strategy unreacted stream were assessed. Additionally, possible coupling with other processes (e.g., biogas upgrading) considered. found that it not obtain profit from renewable any configuration high electricity prices important impact cost. The highest price allowing profitable operation 0.07 USD/kWh recycling process. If coupled upgrading, can also operated cascade similar economic performance. Hence, feasible only very specific conditions: constant low waste-handling facilities. determined set parameters which economically profitable, highlighting conditions cleaner envisaged near future.
