ABSTRACT
The potential of pentapotassium bis(peroxymonosulphate) bis(sulphate) (OXONE) to control biofilms in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS) was evaluated and compared chlorine disinfection. Mature (DW)-isolated Stenotrophomonas maltophilia were formed using a simulated DWDS with rotating cylinder reactor (RCR). After 30 min exposure, OXONE at 10 × minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) caused significant 4 log reduction biofilm culturability comparison the unexposed decrease number non-damaged cells below detection limit (4.8 cells/cm2). effects free restricted approximately 1 both cells. synthetic tap (STW) 25 ºC more stable over 40 days than same conditions. solution exhibited disinfectant about 10% initial during first 9 days, after this time values remained stable. Whereas possible reaction inorganic organic substances STW contributed depletion 48% concentration. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy studies confirmed presence singlet oxygen other radicals S. disinfection OXONE. Overall, constitutes relevant alternative conventional DW for effective DWDS.
