ABSTRACT
The effects of addition minor amount (0.5 wt.%) antimony (Sb) or gadolinium (Gd) and combined Sb Gd wt.%, respectively) on the hot tearing susceptibility (HTS) Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy were investigated experimentally using a "T-shaped" measuring system. Various solidification parameters alloys measured calculated through thermal analysis experiments. microstructure, grain size, morphology crack zone characterized by scanning electron microscopy backscatter diffraction, crystal phases analyzed X-ray diffraction energy-dispersive spectroscopy. results showed that 0.5 wt.% resulted in increase vulnerable temperature range (Tv) reduced eutectic structure content could participate feeding, thereby improving HTS alloy. However, to shortened Tv improved skeleton strength alloy, reducing HTS. Moreover, significantly refined Mg-5Al-3Ca-0.5Gd-0.5Sb feeding ability structure, thus exhibited lowest
