ABSTRACT
An important aspect of the neuromodulatory and neuroprotective actions exerted by neuroactive steroids is that they are sex-specific, as determined sexually dimorphic levels these molecules in plasma nervous tissue. Thus, identification factors generate sex-dimorphic may be crucial from a neuroprotectant perspective. The main driver for sex determination mammals SRY gene subsequent presence specific gonad: testes males ovaries females, thus producing hormonal compounds, primarily androgens estrogens, respectively. Nowadays, it well established despite relevance gonads, other control sexual features, and, among them, chromosome complement highly relevant. In this study, were evaluated liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry hypothalamus, hippocampus four core genotype mouse model, to determine relative contribution gonads determining their levels. data obtained reveal although contributing factor differences steroid levels, some steroids, including testosterone, also influenced brain tissue-specific chromosomes. The presented here adds new piece puzzle level regulation, which useful designing sex-specific approaches pathological conditions affecting system.
