ABSTRACT
Abstract The electrochemical corrosion behavior of Pb–free Sn–8.5Zn–XCr (X = 0, 0.1 0.3, 0.5) solders in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was investigated by potentiodynamic polarization methods, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyses. The results showed that the element Cr affected the anodic polarization behavior of the solders. The corrosion resistance of the Sn-8.5Zn-0.3Cr alloy in the 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was better than other prepared alloys. EDS and XRD analyses confirmed that the hydroxide of zinc (Zn(OH)2) and tin oxyhydroxychloride (Sn3O(OH)2Cl2) were the major corrosion products formed on the surface of the tested solder alloys.
