ABSTRACT
Elderly patients on haemodialysis (HD) are a steadily increasing group. They show high complexity, dependency and comorbidity. Multiple benefits from exercise in HD have been reported; however, they not specifically evaluated an elderly population. To assess the effect of adapted low intensity intradialytic programme muscle strength, functional capacity health-related quality life our (> 80 years) HD.HD were non-randomly assigned to training group (E) or control (C) 12-week single-centre prospective study. E included combined using balls, weights, elastic bands cycle movements first 2 hours sessions. C received standard care. Endpoints were: 1) main biochemical data; 2) maximum quadriceps length strength (MQLS) hand-grip (HG); 3) tests: "Sit stand sit" (STS10) "six-minutes walking test" (6MWT); 4) Beck Depressive Inventory (BDI); 5) Health-related questionnaire: EuroQol-5D (EQ-5D).A total 22 (50% men). Mean age was 83.2 years; had for 44.1 month. Charlson index 9.5. Main aetiology diabetes mellitus (36.4%). Eleven 11 No related adverse effects observed. At end study, showed overall improvement tests (*P<.05): MQLS 10.5 ± 7.6 vs. 12.9 10.1 kg, HG* 16.6 8.7 18.2 8.9 STS10* 29.9 10.6 25 7.87 sec, 6MWT* 14.6%, 234.4 274.7 m, BDI* 14.4 11.5 11.7 10.8 EQ-5D 49 19.1 59.5 20.3. similar changes observed Significant differences between groups also found HG, MQLS, STS10, 6MWT, BDI EQ-5D. significant anthropometric data, antidepressant treatment suitable dialysis parameters at study.1) An improved HD. Our results highlight even this population. In HD, it is worth considering as part comprehensive
