ABSTRACT
Background & Aims: Control of pulmonary exacerbations (PEs) is highly important in the treatment cystic fibrosis (CF).Given evidence extra skeletal properties vitamin D, this study aimed to evaluate effect supplementation with an dose D on CF PEs.Methods: This a randomized crossover clinical trial conducted Brazil.Subjects were randomly allocated receive (5,000-10,000IU/day, liquid, or gelatin capsules) followed by standard (400-2,000IU/day D), for three months, 9-month washout separating each period. The primary endpoint was number PEs during intervention period. In addition, 6-month period following use and regular assessed.Secondary outcome included change serum 25(OH)D after end supplementation. Results: 34 subjects completed (16 received first, 18 first; median age: 5.16 years (1.74:8.07)).A significant statistical reduction not detected (p=0.10).No observed supplementation.More than half had suboptimal levels pre-supplementation only 58% achieved desirable vitamin. Conclusion: Our findings reinforce high prevalence hypovitaminosis CF, despite routine supplementation.Further robust needed analyze possible reducing exacerbations.
