ABSTRACT
Innovative financing arrangements such as index-base crop insurance (IBCI) schemes are increasingly becoming popular in West Africa for managing catastrophic agricultural risks. Recently, an IBCI pilot project was launched Burkina Faso by PlaNet Guarantee1. However, similar to many existing the region, enrolment rate is still very low. One possible explanation this based on fact that remote sensing data used basis design. Although use of appealing respect, it has several limitations. major limitation fails take into account sensitive phases crops cycle, which may be more prone climate and other environmental stresses (Muller, 2014). In paper, we highlights importance using field facts design innovative rural Faso. Farmers' awareness perception hazards relation productivity their willingness participate (WTP) South-western were captured through household surveys focus group discussions. Empirical findings indicate farmers aware effects hazard farm consider mid-season dry spells, during sowing, flowering ripening depending type, most significant risk affecting local productivity. Specifically, 98% sampled willing insure maize, cotton sorghum, but only if periods these spell taken designing contracts. Furthermore, Probit regression analysis indicates probability increases with years farming experience, past experience hazards, educational attainment head insecurity hazard, decreases farmer's age size.
