ABSTRACT
A local limit load model is developed for shell/plate type components with surface cracks determining the or reference stress used in J prediction via scheme defective components. The a plate which contains rectangular crack circumscribing real defect and has same thickness as component at location. remotely loaded by primary stresses of location obtained from elastic uncracked-body analysis. global this component. validated using 273 cases 3-D finite element (FE) results semi-elliptical plates, cylinders elbows. show that when scheme, predicted values are reasonably accurate but conservative, compared FE values.
