ABSTRACT
Transport crates for poultry can contribute to the spread of pathogens, with those public health interest, example, Campylobacter, being particular importance. A strict cleaning procedure and use an effective disinfection method transport equipment are thus important avoid introduction Campylobacter chicken farms, particularly during flock thinning. This study evaluated efficacy currently in at one largest slaughter plants Sweden compared effects other methods. The evaluation was based on treatment ability reduce presence amount indicator bacteria belonging family Enterobacteriaceae total aerobic bacteria. In 4 trials, sodium hypochlorite, peracetic acid, drying hot air, or without hypochlorite final disinfection, were compared. analysis 40 cotton swab samples taken each treatment, 20 after soaking stage step. results showed that a chemical disinfectant combination air (dehumidifier) most average reduction 3.4 log 3.8 Enterobacteriaceae. Since all treated dry, conditions birds also improved, cold weather. disadvantage is this energy-consuming would require substantial technical changes current process, increasing operating costs plant. However, considering contribution improved crate overall hygiene control within supply chain beneficial effect animal welfare, may be justified.
