ABSTRACT
Vertical-axis hydrokinetic turbines are promising option to harness the low velocity currents. However, limited investigations have been carried out considering interactions between turbine rotor and channel section, including free-surface. Thus, a vertical-axis model has designed manufactured, be tested in an open channel. Also, three-dimensional multiphase simulation out, using volume of fluid (VOF) model, capture air–water interface investigate free-surface variations effects on output. Experimentally, characterized under different flow conditions levels. The peak power coefficients found increase with upstream velocity. This effect is directly linked blockage ratio Froude number. A reasonably good match experimental numerical results. VOF able simulate longitudinal variations, field pressure coefficient distribution, around rotor, studied correlated from downstream turbine. Finally, vortex street generated by blade–plate interaction analyzed.
