ABSTRACT
Anti-diabetic effects of ethanolic extract stem bark Anogeissus leiocarpus were investigated in alloxan monohydrate-induced acute type 1 diabetes mellitus (TIDM) extending into chronicity and organic damages 12 adult Nigerian indigenous dogs assigned 4 groups 3 each, namely: non-diabetic controls (ND), diabetic untreated (DU), insulin-treated (DI) extract-treated (DE). All parameters analysed using standard procedures. Hyperglycaemia occurred the dogs; blood glucose significantly (P < 0.001) increased DU group compared with other groups. The decreased levels like insulin 0.002). Haematology revealed macrocytic normochromic anaemia; PCV 0.001), Hb RBC WBC 0.05). Neutrophils 0.05) lymphocytes DU. Organic damage biomarkers, ALT, ALP activities 0.05), albumin urea concentrations Hyponatremia, loss bicarbonates hyperkalemia hyperchloridaemia corrected these haemato-biochemical abberations produced positive anion-gap while those DI negative more retention group. While hyperglycaemia relapsed after withdrawal, normoglycaemia remained without reoccurrence withdrawal A. extract. This alloxan-induced TIDM showed that reduces may prevent development T2DM.
